Local SEO in Jamaica: how to show up on Google Maps

Published By Creative Constructs2 min read

When someone searches “barber near me” or “accountant Mandeville”, Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any normal results. That map, often called the local pack, is where a lot of local customers decide who to call. Here's how to get into it.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the single biggest local ranking factor you control. Claim it, verify it, and fill in everything:

  • Your exact business name, with no keywords stuffed in
  • The most specific primary category, plus relevant secondary categories
  • Service areas (parishes) if you visit customers
  • Opening hours, including holiday hours
  • Real photos of your premises, team and work, added regularly
  • Products or services with descriptions and prices

2. Keep your name, address and phone number consistent

Google cross-checks your details across the web. Make sure your business name, address and phone number match exactly on your website, Google profile, Facebook, Instagram and any Jamaican business directories you're listed in.

3. Get reviews, and reply to them

Reviews affect both your ranking and whether people click. Ask happy customers directly. A WhatsApp message with your review link right after a job works well. Reply to every review, including the negative ones, politely and promptly.

Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them. It breaks Google's rules and can get your profile suspended.

4. Build pages for the places you serve

If you serve several towns, a well-written page for each main area helps Google understand where you work. Each page should be genuinely useful, with local details, relevant projects and directions, not the same text with the town name swapped.

5. Make your website fast and mobile-friendly

Most local searches happen on phones. A slow website that's hard to use on mobile loses visitors and sends weaker signals to Google. Check your site with Google's PageSpeed Insights and fix the biggest problems first.

Common mistakes that hold Jamaican businesses back

  • Using a personal Gmail and losing access when a staff member leaves
  • Different phone numbers on different listings
  • No website linked from the Google profile
  • Choosing a vague category like “business” instead of a specific one
  • Ignoring the Q&A and messages features

Local SEO isn't a one-off job. Businesses that post updates, add photos and earn reviews every month tend to keep climbing.
